Mariah tyes
A North Carolina native by way of Buffalo, New York, Mariah began her photography journey at Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, as a visual arts major grades five through twelve.
Growing up, Mariah would watch her parents and siblings capture their family in photographs and home videos. At the age of ten, Mariah began to take photos of her own, of friends at school, her family, and all of her surroundings.
In 2015 Mariah joined the US Army as a Culinary Specialist. She deployed to Abu Dhabi - UAE for 9 months (AUG 2017- APR 2018), in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (SPARTAN SHIELD). After serving 4.5 years of active duty service, Mariah became a permanent and total disabled veteran. Upon honorable medical discharge from the Army, Mariah has worked and completed her bachelors of arts in digital art, with a concentration in photography from Fayetteville State University.
Mariah also manages full-time motherhood to her four-year-old daughter, Eden Oshun Alvinae’. As she continues to create art in the world, Mariah uses an abstract collage technique to explore and collect very intimate moments of her subjects, especially including herself. This level of introspection is what inspires her most recent works. From a lens of juxtaposition, Mariah strives to celebrate unapologetic black beauty through time, and throughout all of her work. She often experiments with other mediums such as watercolor/ acrylic/ and oil painting, to incorporate within her collage exploration. She hopes to create these works on a larger scale, encouraging more depth through embellishments and various other materials. Mariah is an esteemed digital & analog photographer, currently pursuing her graduate degree in art therapy & counseling from Edgewood College. She is establishing her creative voice, with BIG dreams of being truly seen as the artist she has always been.
